Bethany Holmes
Abstract painter exploring colour, rhythm and the layering of lived experience.
Working from a secluded studio in rural Essex, Bethany Holmes creates energetic abstract paintings shaped not by topography, but by sensation. The shifting light, subtle changes in temperature and the nuanced interaction of colour provide the impetus for her work. Walks through the countryside offer tones rather than views, and these distilled impressions become the foundation of her abstractions.
Each painting begins with a meditative search for palette. Colour mixing becomes reflection, refinement and recollection. Once the harmony is found, the act of painting shifts into impulse. Her approach is instinctive and physical, paint committed to surface with urgency and abandon. Working in close proximity to the canvas, rhythm takes over in sweeping, striking gestures where tension and control exist in balance.
Holmes speaks of a desire to reach a “perfect imbalance” in every work. Some resolve in hours, others over years, but each painting is a layered record of time, movement and emotional resonance.
Available Work
Colour sits at the centre of Holmes’s practice. Her instinctive palettes avoid artificiality, instead seeking nuanced, organic harmonies that carry depth and subtle vibration. Black is often introduced to temper and cool, securing a deliberate imperfection that she values.
Rooted in a foundation of life drawing, her abstractions retain a trace of the human contour. Charcoal gestures and layered surfaces reveal an intuitive carving of space, memory and presence. These are paintings that hold energy within them, yet live beautifully within an interior, offering both dynamism and quiet complexity for collectors.
Her work is held in private collections across the UK, Norway, Hong Kong and the United States, and she maintains gallery representation throughout Britain.
