Emma Lock

Contemporary abstract painter exploring emotion, tension and stillness through layered, intuitive mark making.

Emma Lock is a contemporary artist whose work is rooted in the natural world, translated into expressive abstract landscapes. Guided by emotion and intuition, she works with acrylic, pastel and graphite, building layered surfaces that evoke both depth and serenity.

Her process moves between control and surrender. Structured gestures meet spontaneous marks, creating compositions that hold tension and stillness in equal measure. Chaos is balanced with calm. Fullness is pared back to essential lines and textures. Through repetition, layering and reduction, Emma reveals raw, organic moments that give her work its distinctive energy.

These are paintings that reward time. Works that settle into a space while retaining movement and emotional presence.

Available Work

At the core of my practice is a desire to create space for emotional connection. I want the work to resonate on a visceral level, to evoke a response that feels instinctive, almost bodily. I hope viewers not only feel something, but pause and question why they feel it, allowing the emotion to unfold.

Abstract painting draws me because it bypasses language and logic. It goes straight to the gut. Colour, shape and mark making carry memory, tension and release. When I paint, I am not simply building a composition. I am expressing something that cannot be said in words.

Working in layers of acrylic, pastel and graphite, I reveal and obscure in equal measure. This layering becomes a metaphor for lived experience. Moments of clarity. Moments of chaos. Moments of stillness. There is always a push and pull between beauty and substance. If something feels too resolved, I disrupt it. If it feels too chaotic, I refine it.

Ultimately, I hope the paintings offer a quiet invitation to feel deeply and to connect with something unspoken within yourself.
