Laura Menzies
Contemporary painter exploring memory, material and the emotional resonance of place.
Laura Menzies is a contemporary British painter based in Cornwall. Working primarily in oil, cold wax and mixed media, her practice centres on atmosphere, texture and the subtle interplay between abstraction and memory.
Trained at the University of Birmingham, where she completed a BA in Performing and Visual Arts, Menzies later gained an MA in Fine Art from Falmouth University. She has exhibited extensively across the UK and internationally, including presentations at Tate Modern and Tate St Ives. She is currently represented by Morgans Gallery, Milieu Studios and a number of leading art consultancies. Alongside her studio practice, she is a trained educator and has taught at Falmouth University, St Ives School of Painting and The Eden Project.
Menzies’ paintings unfold through an intuitive and fluid process. Layers of oil paint, cold wax, collage and pigment are built up and scraped back, creating surfaces that hold a visible history. The resulting works feel both lyrical and grounded, with line, colour and texture forming a quiet yet complex visual language.

“My lyrical paintings are like visual poems, spoken through constructs of memories, emotions and indirect references to place. These influences are not overt but sit at the edge of consciousness, gradually seeping in as the work evolves.
I paint intuitively in a fluid manner, building up and scraping back layers of oil paint, cold wax, collage and pigments to create a palimpsest of lines, colours and textures that reveal traces of the work’s history.
My paintings are sensory and evocative, the result of looking, thinking and feeling. They aim to reveal things that are not immediately visible and often cannot be put into words. I hope the work offers a space for contemplation and reflection, one in which the viewer can momentarily lose themselves in its visual and physical presence.”
